What is School Readiness?

 What is School Readiness?

School readiness is the measure of skills and behaviours the child has developed that enable them to participate and succeed in school. School readiness does not only refer to academic (literacy and numeracy) skills but the overall developmental skills of your child — their social, emotional, play, physical-motor, communication and cognitive skills.

Is my child a candidate?

Early identification can save parents and teachers a lot of headaches and heartache. The difference between intervening correctly and otherwise — has outcomes that are vastly different.

Early signs may be detected by teachers or parents including:

  • Delayed development early in life, for example, speech and language delay, a generally “difficult” childhood in milestone acquisitions;

  • Compared to peers, is slow in picking up reading and writing skills even with extra enrichment support;

  • Appears to have attentional difficulties — does not seem to retain information, communication may seem immature or “off” to family and friends;

  • May be asked by kindergarten teachers to repeat a year of kindergarten.

Our School Readiness Program

If you notice your child not having key developmental skills you can determine that your child requires support to be ready for school.

Total Communication’s School Readiness Program will provide a one-stop solution for all of your child’s needs. Our School Readiness Program (SRP) focuses on facilitating children’s key academic skills such as essential education, personal management, classroom adaptation, and group learning abilities that are necessary for successful school integration.

It follows a detailed early intervention approach that focuses on children’s core developmental abilities, which enhances reading, numeracy, handwriting, sensory-motor, and play skills, to assist them to transition smoothly into regular primary school classes.

Our goal with the program is to not only make your child’s transition to school stress-free, but also to develop 21st-century skills such as cooperation, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and independence.
